File Extension Pst

The Personal Storage Table (PST) .pst file extension is used for organizing, storing and accessing essential Microsoft mail messaging information - addresses, appointments, calendar items, contacts, e-mail, Inbox and notes. It is a personal folder backup - a placeholder for e-mail information - that creates a localized copy of personal data. Microsoft frequently uses this "localized copy technique" to free up memory capacity for computer processing.

Regtask was able to clean up my computer and speed up the performance! I highly recommend it

Jo H.

My computer was always popping up with registry errors and I couldnt get rid of them. Regtask did the job for me and took less then 5 minutes to speed up my computer.

Samantha J.

I have to admit I'm no computer geek. When something goes wrong, I usually have to call someone to fix it and it costs me a lot of money. When my computer started to experience random freezes, I just used Regtask and now it works normally again.

David G.

My computer is 5 years old and runs extremely slow now. I was a bit sceptical about using Regtask, but just decided to give it a shot in the end and it worked out fantastically for me.

As a Microsoft Outlook creation, the file extension .pst is opened, accessed and run on Microsoft-based programs, such as Mac OS (Microsoft Entourage) and Windows (Microsoft Outlook and Microsoft Exchange). The limited Microsoft Outlook Express version can only import .pst data.

The .pst file extension type is highly convertible to almost any Microsoft-based format, like Microsoft Office. Many applications can import .pst data via Messaging Application Programming Interface (MAPI) calls. But, since the .pst file format is proprietary, it cannot be read by common third-party applications like Eudora or Mozilla.

More Info Regarding File Extension Pst

The computer user can access file extension .pst files using the following steps: open up Microsoft Outlook, open File Menu, place pointer on Open and click, then click the Outlook Data File, select the .pst file to be opened and Click OK.

Use the Go Menu at the top of the screen to access Folder List. Click on it. The default name is "Personal Folders".

The file extension .pst uses the American National Standard Institute (ANSI) format. Since Microsoft Outlook 2003, the Unicode format has been used.

The "Personal Information Storage File" type .pst file extension has a two gigabyte size limit, becoming unstable as it reaches that limit. Data will be corrupted if that file limit is exceeded. The size can be reduced by compacting the .pst file.

Since the file extension .pst is a reference to mail data, any alteration of the .pst file leads to modification of the internal Microsoft Outlook data. As a result, backing up .pst files, backs up all Microsoft Outlook information.

Common problems with the file extension .pst includes the inability to open or access data, data corruption and major security breaches.

If problems ensue while opening a file with extension .pst, make sure that the program is up-to-date. If it is not a Microsoft-based program, then it might not work.

Data corruption can occur for many reasons. It might be difficult to open .pst files if there are Windows Registry related errors. The Windows Registry may have accumulated fragments, debris and unneeded temporary files from previously applications and programs. These files multiply, especially during installation and are oftentimes not completely removed during de-installation.

Drivers are installed to help assist programs and application functions. These are oftentimes replaced with better versions which remove bugs and increase efficiency. Remove these outdated and updated drivers left over from unused programs to improve computer performance.

A Windows Registry scan can diagnosis, check, analyze and report on possible Windows Registry problems. This scan will identify errors and key conflicts that may be impeding performance.

Once you remove old, leftover, unused debris from the Windows Registry, you will increase computing speed. Fewer system crashes will occur. Data will be managed in better condition. Continually, "clean" out these orphaned and stray file fragments with frequent performance scans to optimize computer performance.

There are many programs and applications available for repairing damaged or destroyed .pst files. It is wise to backup the original version - before attempting a repair - in case problems arise.

Security has always been a problem with the file extension .pst. Since Microsoft-based programs are so common, hackers have been very active in finding ways to corrupt and steal data from files based on this platform.

While passwords can be set up to protect the .pst data, these can be easily stolen because they are stored in text format within the file. Thus, anyone with access to the internal file data, can figure out the password and remove the password protection.

The simplistic text format makes encryption difficult. Hackers have used viruses and worms to infect these formats, stealing personal data. Be careful to avoid identity theft.
